Dr. Manmohan Singh Chauhan, currently Vice-Chancellor of prestigious G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar has served ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI, Deemed University), Karnal (Haryana) as Director cum Vice-Chancellor for two & half years. Before joining NDRI, he was Director of ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Goats, Makhdoom, Mathura and served 4 years. In his career, he served ICAR-NDRI and ICAR-IVRI in different capacity i.e. from Scientist to Principal Scientist. During his tenure as Director cum Vice-Chancellor of NDRI, Karnal, he placed NDRI Deemed University on the top First Rank University amongst all the Agricultural Universities of India, also placed NDRI to A+ accredited University of ICAR.
Dr. Chauhan has significantly contributed towards the development of Assisted Reproductive Technology such as: i) developed Embryonic Stem Cell technology and produced 5 Embryonic buffalo Stem Cell lines and 2 Spermatogonial stem cell lines; ii) ovum pick up -IVF technology in cattle and yak and produced India’s first OPU-IVF Sahiwal calf ‘Holi’ and OPU-IVF yalk calf ‘Norgyal’; iii) developed a simple hand guided Cloning Technology in buffalo and produced 27 cloned buffaloes namely, world first cloned buffalo calf ‘Garima’, ‘Garima-II’, ‘Shresth’, ‘Swarn’, ‘Purnima’, ‘Lalima’, ‘Rajat’, Deepasha and many more. Recently in March 2023, he along with his team at the NDRI have developed a simple cloning technology for Indian Gir cow and produced India’s first Gir cloned calf named “GANGA”. iv) Semen freezing and AI in goat and v) established transgenic animal production methodology in buffaloes of pharmaceutical and agricultural use. The OPU-IVF, goat semen freezing technology and Cloning Technology have gone to field.
Dr. Chauhan has been Principal Investigator (PI) of 11 externally funded projects and Co-PI of 9 inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional externally funded projects with total Rs. 23.88 crore funds granted by Department of Biotechnology, DST, NAIP-ICAR and NASF of ICAR. He has guided (Major guide) 10 Doctoral and 9 Master’s dissertations. Besides research, he has also contributed in teaching and developed 4 courses of animal physiology and biotechnology for post graduate students.
Dr. Chauhan is a Fellow of Indian National Science Academy (INSA); Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI); Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS); Fellow of National Academy of Dairy Sciences (NADS); Fellow of Society of Extension Education (SEE).
Dr. Chauhan is recipients of Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award by ICAR, 2015; Dr. P. Bhattacharya Memorial Award by NAAS 2020; Rao Bahadur B. Viswanath Award 2019 by IARI, New Delhi; VASVIK Industrial Award in Agricultural Sciences, 2015; ICAR-Team Award in Animal Sciences 2014; Dr. Labhsetwar Award by ISSRF 2016; DBT Biotechnology Overseas Fellowship Award, 1997; Exemplary Research Award in Dairy Science, Virginia Tech., USA 1999; Doctor of Science (Honoris causa) by the NDRI (Deemed University), Karnal; Prof. SS Guraya award by ISSRF, Jaipur; Dr. K.K. Iya Oration award 2023 by NDRI, visiting scientist to Germany 2009 and USA; European Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Award in 2009; Executive Council Member of the NAAS Academy, 2021; Member of 3 Task Force committee of DBT Govt. of India and received 2 Appreciation letter from DG, ICAR and 2 Appreciation letter from Hon’ble Agriculture Minister (Govt. of India). He has organized 5 conferences (3 National and 2 International) including 12th NAAS Congress at NDRI, Karnal. Besides this, 14 National trainings for Scientists/ Faculty/ Biotechnology students (21 days) were co-ordinated by him.
