The Department was established in the year 1968 by the name Department of Mathematics and Statistics which was later renamed as Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science in the year 1998. Earlier basic thrust of the department was to teach courses of Mathematics and Statistics in various undergraduate and postgraduate programs of the university. With growth of the subject in the field of Science and Technology, the Department kept pace and stated Master and Doctoral programs in Mathematics/ Agricultural Statistics/ Statistics in last 25 years. Presently, Department brings together high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate education and also an active research body of academics and PhD students. The department has a good reputation for student satisfaction and superior employability. The research thrust areas are fluid mechanics, functional analysis, reliability theory, approximation theory, pattern recognition, Artificial Intelligence, Neural Network, applied statistics and sampling theory. The Department is rigorously pursuing the development of Mathematical and Statistical models for predication of agricultural production, disease surveillance and financial stock analysis.

Initially, the mandate was to improve analytical skills of the students of different disciplines by teaching them foundation and advanced courses of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. With revolution in the field of ICT and Computational Sciences, growth is mandatory for the development and to facilitate the society. Thus, the objectives of the Department are not only for Human resource development in the field of Mathematics, Statistics and Computational Sciences but also to provide Statistical/ Mathematical advisement to the Students/ Researchers/ Scientists for the analysis of their research data in University and Inter-university globally.

The courses of Mathematics were introduced in the Department of Physical Sciences in the year 1960 along with the establishment of the university. Department introduced computer usage in the university with acquisition of TDC-12 in 1973; MICRO-32 in 1986 and at present, Xeon based Super-32 with smart terminal technology is being used for research data analysis. Separate PC Labs for UG and PG courses are also being run to teach the Computer Science Courses. Presently, Department is offering M.Sc. prgrammes major in Mathematics/ Agricultural Statistics /Statistics and Ph.D. Mathematics/ Agricultural Statistics/ Statistics. Department brings together high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate education and also an active research body of academics and PhD students. The department has a good reputation for student satisfaction and superior employability.

The research thrust areas are fluid mechanics, functional analysis, reliability theory, approximation theory, pattern recognition, Artificial Intelligence, Neural Network, Data Science, Soft Computing, applied statistics and sampling theory. The Department is rigorously pursuing the development of Mathematical and Statistical models for predication of agricultural production, disease surveillance and financial stock analysis. The sanctioned strength of the Department is 1 Professor, 5 Associate Professor and 9 Assistant Professor. Presently 5 faculties are working to serve the Department with two additional faculty members.

Implementation of AI techniques in agricultural and allied sciences for enhancement of productivity with quality

To start online training/consultancy related with Data Sciences.

Long-Term Goals:

To establish a School of Computational Sciences with Centre of Excellence in Mathematics.

To start new major and minor courses at undergraduate level in Operation Research, Reliability Management, Bio-informatics, Data Science and automation in online mode through International faculty.

Orientation of Mathematics foundation program at state level for undergraduate students

To develop professional developmental courses to sharpen individual skill-set and to develop team with a flexible range of continuing Professional Development courses.

Computer Laboratories: Department has about 200 computer programmes in FORTRAN for Mathematical and Statistical modeling. 16 VT-220 terminals are connected with LINUX based Super Server . One Pentium server and 15 PCs are connected on LAN for PG students and 10-Desktop PCs are for UG students

Departmental Library: Besides the University Central Library, Department has its own library consisting of about 200 books of Mathematics, Statistics & Computer Science.
