ACHIEVEMENTS
Teaching
The department of Animal Genetics and Breeding is one of the important departments of the college which imparts quality education to Undergraduate students for the B.V.Sc & AH degree programme, and Master’s and Ph.D. degree programmes.
The department offers 01 course at Undergraduate level and 23 courses at Postgraduate (Master’s/Ph.D.) level. The department of Animal Genetics and Breeding has so far produced 26 students at Master’s level and 14 at Ph.D. level since Nov. 1998 and a total number of 162 students at Master’s level and 57 at Ph.D. level including the students from Animal Science department too.
RESEARCH
The major areas of research have been Population and Quantitative Genetics, Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics, and Characterization of Livestock. The department has more than 300 research papers and 115 popular articles to its credit published in National and International journals of repute. The number of papers presented in various National and International Conferences/Symposia is more than 460. The salient achievements in research are as follows:
- Characterization of Badri cattle and Tarai buffaloes.
- Characterization and registration of Uttara fowl in collaboration of Department of LPM.
- Base line survey of some lesser known breeds of livestock in Uttarakhand viz Black sheep, special types of goat and buffaloes.
- Studies were conducted on Molecular characterization of Chaugarkha and Udaipuri goat of Uttarakhand using a set of microsatellite markers.
- Developed two, three, and four way crosses involving Sahiwal, Red Dane, Jersey and Holstein Friesian (Half-breds of Holstein Friesian and Sahiwal excelled in milk production and profitability).
- Developed elite flock of Guinea Fowls for its rearing in Uttarakhand.
- Biochemical polymorphic studies have been conducted in dairy cattle and poultry.
- Conservation and improvement of Murrah buffaloes.
EXTENSION
- The department also extends services through participation in farmer fairs, Kisan Gosthees, Radio Talks/TV programmes, cattle/dog shows etc.
- The department has so far got recorded 69 Radio Talks and 25 TV programmes for the benefit of the livestock owners/farmers.
- The faculty members of the department participate as resource persons in the training programmes organized by the department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension, and Directorate of Extension for Extension Workers, Veterinary Officers, Farmers, Para veterinary staff etc.
- The faculty members of the department have participated in the Krishak Mahotsav and presently participating in Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav programme.
